Premier motor insurance (also known as high net worth motor insurance) policies offer a range of cover levels and a range of additional benefits above and beyond those provided by standard motor insurance policies. These additional features vary widely from policy to policy, so it’s important that you ensure the premier car insurance policy you choose provides the level of cover that you’re looking for.

Defaqto Premier Motor Insurance Star Ratings assess the level of cover, excesses and features of every high net worth motor insurance policy on the market. What’s more, we’re 100% independent, so you can be assured that our premier motor insurance ratings are completely unbiased.

Standard motor insurance products are reviewed and rated separately from premier motor insurance policies and scored using separate criteria as they carry a different level of features.

Premier motor insurance rating criteria

We assess each premier motor insurance policy against 58 criteria before attributing each product a Star Rating. Amongst these are the criteria used to calculate our standard car insurance ratings such as level of cover and services such as 24 hour helplines in addition to other features, including:

  • Agreed value: The insurer pays you the agreed value of your car if it is damaged and is beyond repair or stolen and not recovered.
  • Comprehensive cover for driving other cars: Some policies will allow all insured drivers or named drivers to drive a car that does not belong to them on a comprehensive basis.
  • Car jacking: If you are a victim of a car-jacking incident, some insurers will provide cover towards certain costs, such as injuries that require medical attention or counselling services.
  • Personal registration plate: If your car is stolen and not recovered, some insurers will pay for the loss of use of the personal registration plate.
  • Courtesy car: Provides a courtesy car which is of equal standing to your own car, or a fixed sum for you to hire a car of a similar standing.
  • Repairer choice: A number of insurers will allow you to choose the repairer of your choice without losing the benefit of a courtesy car.

Core criteria

In addition to our overall scoring methodology, we set ‘core criteria’ – features chosen to reflect the high standards of facilities or benefits which a 5 Star premier motor insurance policy should meet. This extra check prevents a product from being assigned the highest rating if it omits features or cover levels which we believe customers should expect to find in a 5 Star policy.

You can use the tools on the right to find and compare the premier motor insurance policies with 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5 Stars or to find the Star Rating of your current policy and compare it to similar products on the market.
