Are you covered against rage on the roads?

Mike Powell, Insight Analyst, General Insurance

A staggering 94% of motor insurance policies in 2010 do not offer any cover for road rage, although this is still an improvement from 2005, when the figure was 99%. Benefit limits range from £500 to £5,000 and usually cover costs incurred for professional counselling, although some also give you a benefit for physical assault.

Be aware that road rage can include incidents caused by a relative or a person known to the you, or incidents caused or contributed by anything said or done by you or a passenger in your car.

What to do if you are involved in a road rage incident:

  • Get out of their way and try not to aggravate the other driver, which could make the situation even more dangerous.
  • If the angry driver is making rude gestures ignoring them is usually the best option.
  • Breathe deep and relax in order to stay calm. This means you will be able to handle the situation better.
  • Don't retaliate to anything they are saying or doing, and if you are really worried that the situation could escalate go to the nearest police station.
  • Do not go home if an angry driver is following you.
