Mike Powell, Insight Analyst, General Insurance

If you're planning a winter break, make sure you have taken appropriate steps to secure your home before you go away.

Check the details of your home insurance cover

  • It's important to check your home insurance policies (buildings and contents). If you're not sure that you're covered, call your insurer and check.
  • Make sure the security measures you take are in line with the terms and conditions of the policy;
  • Check that you have adequate cover in case if the wost should happen;
  • Check if your insurer has a limit on how long you can leave the property empty - you may need to call and extend your cover.

Take some basic safety precautions

  • Advise a trusted neighbour, friend or family member that you are going away. They can perhaps check there isn't any post sticking out of your door alerting intruders that no-one is home.
  • Don't hide keys outside your home and only give them to someone you trust and know well. Make sure you retrieve them when you're back.
  • Put your lights on a timer so that it appears that someone is living in your property.
  • Use your window and door locks
  • Hopefully by following these guidelines you'll have a more restful break knowing you've done everything you can to protect your home.
