Portfolios are appraised on both cumulative and discrete performance across a variety of time periods, including five-year, three-year, one-year and year to date. They’re ranked accordingly and distributed across five performance comparators:

- Balanced

In-depth analysis
Our visual reports clearly demonstrate a portfolio’s key metrics against the relevant comparator, including asset allocation, annualised returns, group ranking, cumulative performance, costs and investment ratios over different time periods.
Our methodology
To construct the Comparators, we initially calculate annualised returns and standard deviations (volatilities) of 900 portfolios. We look at the last five years, using monthly price data, net of fees. For portfolios with less than five years’ history, we used their latest asset allocations to assess the best fit.
The annualised volatilities across all the portfolios are split into five equal groups. This gives us a range for each of the five Comparators – Defensive, Cautious, Balanced, Growth and Adventurous.
We now assess where individual portfolios fall within these volatility ranges, and assign each portfolio to its appropriate Comparator.
